A contracting team managing one of the busiest International Airports in the United States had been attempting to replace the antiquated copper POTS lines that powered the E terminal for years. This had proved to be next to impossible to implement with traditional broadband, due to the unique infrastructure of the terminal as well as the federal regulations restricting potential solutions.
Solution
Utilizing 18 POTS Link units, our team was able to provide the solution needed to convert 84 copper lines to a VoLTE-based system with no changes to existing infrastructure. This solution not only achieved the goal of transitioning to a digital solution but also resulted in significant savings from the monthly cost of these lines.

Outside of the specific goals that were achieved in this project, the communication lines of Terminal E now benefit from a 24/7/365 monitoring platform.
Background & Challenges
Being one of the busiest airports in the world is no easy task. This global gateway offers nonstop service to more than 150 domestic and 70 international destinations. Additionally, providing services on this scale is no easy task. This airport claims the title of the largest employer in the state with more than 63,000 on-site jobs provided.
Taking pride in the prestige of their airport, the management team of Terminal E had been looking for a way to modernize their legacy communications. Ensuring a smooth transition to a new solution was mission-critical as it is no exaggeration to say that these lines are what keep the gate running.
Cost
The average cost of POTS Lines are increasing. This is not a phenomenon that is localized only to airports, in fact, in some areas of California, POTS costs have risen for organizations in all sectors by 458% since 2016.
Factoring in the size of the terminal, the management team knew the type of savings that could be made with the right replacement solution.
Infrastructure
As the search for a replacement began the team realized wireline would not be a viable solution due to the unique infrastructure and airport regulations that prevented any type of broadband or fiber buildout to the terminal. To make matters more complicated, the lines terminated in challenging demarcation rooms, each with dozens of 66 blocks and lines that weren’t labeled.

Uptime Monitoring
When a line went down in the past, an employee would alert the management team who would, in turn, reach out to a 3rd party to truck roll in and fix the issue. POTS Link provides the IT Team with a cloud management platform that provides the terminal with 24/7/365 communication monitoring.
Cost Reduction
The contracting team cited cost as a major pain point for them on traditional POTS lines. To make matters worse, the current provider has notified the team of an impending price increase coming in 2022. Switching to POTS Link ended up netting about 50% savings per line.
