What You Can Expect From Traditional Lines

For site I.T. staff, relying on outdated POTS technology to perform mission-critical functions can pose unnecessary risks to both the organization that owns the POTS lines and the customers that choose to visit that location. Many retail and food service locations lean on POTS lines to power things like elevators, alarm systems, HVAC units, ATMs, and phones. As an example, in emergency situations burglary or fire alarms connected through copper lines must work as intended. Due to the limited visibility of traditional POTS lines, it isn’t always possible to confirm their operational status. The only way to ensure a traditional line works is to manually test it, and for organizations with a large number of POTS lines that can easily be mislabeled, not labeled at all, or unorganized, manually testing each line can quickly become a nightmare. Additionally, if a line is needed and doesn’t work customers could be put in a dangerous situation with no way to escape or contact help. Situations like this can potentially open organizations up to lawsuits and other accusations of misconduct or negligence.
